Welcome to the first Cape Town International Guitar Festival
2011 and the second Avril Kinsey Classical Guitar Competition.The
festival and competition, set in the exquisite wine estate of Groot
Constantia, is dedicated to becoming a premier biennial event on
Cape Town’s
calendar. It is my dream that guitar students, teachers and music
lovers come to the event from all over the world, to experience
master performers and teachers at work. Since forming the Cape
Town Academy of Music in 2000, my vision is to see young and old
perform, share and learn from each other, so that their interest
in the guitar becomes a deep and valued lifelong passion, and even
a career.
The competition with its total value of R75,000
is for 12 and younger (Junior),13 to 19 years (Youth), and 20 and
older (Open). It includes prizes for amateur and professional levels.
Any person of any age, nationality or level may enter, because I
believe learning never stops. Even professionals need to keep perfecting
their craft, as I discovered when I completed a research dissertation
which brought to light 320 classical guitar compositions by 72 South
African composers. This was all the motivation I needed to become
an ambassadress for the cause of the classical guitar within and
beyond the borders of South Africa.
Through our non-profit association, Friends
of the Cape Town Academy of Music (FCTAM 077942), our vision
to foster talent and musical excellence through education, performances
and festival events has become a reality. FCTAM is also the financial
vehicle through which our friends, patrons and sponsors partner
with us.
